Hello, I’m Joanna

My art career started in 2017 with a bunch of wool and a felted slipper kit. At the time, I had a very demanding job and was looking for a hobby to relieve some of the stress I was feeling. The slippers surprisingly turned out really well, which gave me the confidence to buy more wool. Soon I was making needle-felted pumpkins, and eventually I began creating 2D felted art. I loved the versatility of the wool, the way I could move it around like paint, the softness, and the happy accidents created by fibres overlapping and interweaving. I’m still quite proud of some of the lovely pieces I created in that stage.

Inspired, but realizing that the wool fiber “dust” was aggravating my allergies, I experimented with new mediums: oils, acrylics, pastels, watercolors, and pencils. Living in a condo with limited space, pencils turned out to be the best option, compact and tidy (though I still have multiple plastic tubs of wool waiting to be felted someday). When Covid arrived in 2020, I happily had this outlet to focus my time and attention on.

Since then, I’ve advanced my technique and had the pleasure of creating many pet portrait commissions. I still accept a handful of commissions each year, as I can’t resist recreating those soulful eyes and sweet expressions.

This year, I’m beginning my first original series, and working on the largest piece I’ve ever created. My goal is to explore light, hidden edges, soft shifts of color on white feathers, and the contrast between delicate plumage, sharp beaks, and rugged bird feet. I’d love to share the process with you along the way, and I hope you’ll join me as this new chapter unfolds.
